Not much bad about Belgium. Locals complain it is boring, but as a tourist I never had trouble finding things to do. The political situation is rather difficult, in as that governments almost never last their time and it takes forever to get the new government after elections, the record took more than a year.
But nobody seems to worry about it, the country runs like it always does. There has been a time when a series of kidnappings of young girls happened, they found who was responsible, got him judged and in prisson. Since then there do not seem kidnap cases other than parents who want custody over their own children, just like in most countries.
Education is seen as a bit old fashioned but very good, at least by the Dutch. Kids in border areas often cross into Belgium for the quality of the education. Check out where you are going to work, select carefully where you want to live, as there is a clear distinction in areas and French speaking people in Flemish areas near Brussels are not welcomed by the neighbours.
As English speaking foreigner it might be less of a problem, but you should learn the language of the area you live, whether it is French or the local version of Dutch. If/when you have children you will find they go to the local school and learn the local language. German is spoken in a rather small part of Belgium, very close to the German border, it is not very useful elsewhere in the country.
Do not expect the Belgian people to want to speak German if it is not their own language. Specially the Dutch speaking (also known as Flemish) do not like German.
It is a complex country. Take care to move to an area with minimum strife between Francophone and Flemish communities, so steer clear of Brussels and the frontier between the two main language groups. The extreme north and the extreme south are good bets and personally I find the German-speaking town of Eupen in the extreme east of the country the happiest part of the whole country.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
