Philadelphia has the most colleges and Universities of any city in Pennsylvania but Pittsburgh is a close second. The Pennsylvania State University in State College Pennsylvania is the largest school in the state with over 40,000 registered students at the University Park campus alone. Since State College only has a population of about 50,000 the city has the highest density of college students.
Pittsburgh is much more affordable to live in than Philadelphia. Housing costs and transportation costs are significantly less. The cost of restaurants, groceries and utilities are also less than in Philadelphia.
Living costs in Central Pennsylvania are also relatively inexpensive compared to Philadelphia. Since Penn State is a land grant institution the costs for a state resident to attend are much lower most of the universities in Philadelphia. Other cities with multiple educational institutions are Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Harrisburg and Erie.
