True possums are native to Australia, New Guinea Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region. They have been introduced to New Zealand The word "possum" in North America is a shortened form of the opossum which is a completely different animal, hardly related at all except that they are both marsupials.
