My views on this aren't fully set; I just would like to sample a range of opinion. Examples would be nice, too. Asked by HarpOnMe 51 months ago Similar questions: reportable spamming Askville Computers > Internet.
How I approach the issues while wearing my dual hats (Askville community member and author) I'm new to the community, but I'll tell you how I've approached this as an Askville community member and author. Because I have a lot of knowledge and real-world experience in the categories that my books focus on, I tend to answer questions in those categories quite often. They're not my only areas of interest, however, so you'll find me answering questions in a variety of different categories (often chosen at random, depending on what catches my interest/attention on any given day) and asking questions about whatever is on my mind (my obsession of the day).
Most people who are here to participate in the community (as opposed to promoting their own products) are likely to do likewise. If someone is answering every question with "You need the ACME Spamatron. Check out spamatron.spam."(or some slightly more sophisticated version of that basic script), chances are the person's intention is to promote their own product.
When I answer a question that relates to one of my books (like some of the toddler-related questions that I've answered recently), I may or may not reference one of my books in the sources box. Here's how I decide. If the content is drawn heavily from one of my books, I'll cite the source as I would do for any other author's book.
I don't want to plagiarize my own books. If the content is drawn from my life experience or what I've learned from talking to other parents or my research for an article or whatever, I'll cite that as the source. Here's the bottom line as I see it: Review spam, answer spam, blog spam and any other type of spam is rude because it's inflicting your ad message on someone who was expecting to encounter bonafide editorial content.
It's also about as appetizing as some of the classic recipes that were designed to sell truckloads of real SPAM. Spamming people is like showing up at a friend's dinner party and delivering a 20 minute sales pitch -- complete with PowerPoint presentation -- because another dinner guest innocently asked you what you do for a living. Or, worse, inviting guests to a dinner party that turns out to be a pitch-fest for the marketing scam du jour.
It's no way to win friends in the real-world or online. These websites have good information: teachakitty. Org and oldcatsnewtricks. Com and have helped me teach my cat enough tricks to go on David Letterman. It's kind of like that old saying, "I can't explain what it is, but I know it when I see it.
" Personally, I only turn people in for the first kind of spam--the blatant kind. If someone takes the time to answer the question correctly and then plugs an unrelated book, website or product, I leave that to the person asking the question to complain about. If I answer I question I have a lot of knowledge about, and I've written a book about the subject, or have a web site on it, of course I'm going to say that.
It shows I am an expert, and offers a way to get even more information on the subject. I always say that they are mine--I don't hide it. I don't think it's spamming to answer a question on experience with Alzheimer's disease with my experience and then a link to my blog about my dad's Alzheimer's.
If you offer a 3d party website that you are not affiliated with, that isn't spam. Askville doesn't seem to care--the point of this site is drive traffic to Amazon, and if you think this product is funny and you buy it, it worked..
Here's what I think, for what it's worth I think that if you ask a certain question, let's say about flowers, for example. If a person answers it with info on how to get a free playstation 3 (or something to that effect), then that's spamming. If they totally disregard the question just to get their "ad" in, that's wrong..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
