The permanent militarization of America that caused the collapse of the Soviet Union without a "hot war". After WWI and WWII there was rapid demobilization but the onset of the Korean War seems to have given the leaders of the USA the hard lesson that every time we disarm ourselves somebody will try to take advantage of that pretty quickly. So against all our national traditions, the military-industrial complex was given permanent priority institutionally.
This did deter nuclear war and let the USSR collapse of its own internal contradictions but the cost was pretty high for us too. And it made changes to our national character in some undesirable directions. Then after the USSR collapse the "peace dividend" was declared and we started to demobilize slowly.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
