Instant replay was officially added to MLB last night at three ballparks as a trail run. It wasn't used yet, but it has generated a lot of debate about whether it should have been added or not. I have mixed feelings about the change myself.

I think it is a great idea for what they intend. I think instant replay is a great idea for what they intend to replay...homerun calls. There really are probably only 50 disputed homerun calls a year and since a homerun is such a game changing event I think if they can use instant replay to get the call right they should.

They did a study before they instituted instant replay and this year 17 homerun calls would have been reversed/corrected. 17 homeruns while it does not seem like a lot it could have changed quite a few games. This year it seems like there were more disputed calls than I can remember in the past.

You would think it would be simple to make a homerun call but because of the configurations of some parks, strange ground rules at some parks, not to mention the distance the umpires are from the outfield fence it can be a very difficult call. One of the main objections to replay is the time it could add to games. Number one there should not be many disputed calls...maybe once a week in all of baseball....so that is not much of a factor. As long as when a dispute occurs they can get to the replay quickly and make a judgement I do not really see it adding any time to the game...since typically disputed calls involve a meeting of the umpires and managers argueing the call anyway.

The replay should not add much if any time. It may actually save time. The most important thing to me is to get the call right.

The other negative I guess is if this works well they may start instant replaying other calls and I do kind of agree that if they get carried away and start replaying every close play at a base, every catch, etc...then it could be a negative.

I like the idea a lot! But, it is only here on a trial basis, so let's not count our chickens before they are hatched. The best reason for using it is was stated last years by Yankee's GM Brian Cashman: "But nobody wants to be in a position where you work morning, noon and night for 12 months, and have it go down to one call in one game.

Each game is important. All I know is I support any form and fashion of baby steps toward utilizing technology to benefit the umpires and the game. " mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=2007110... Back twenty or so years ago, many MLB stadia had large screens that showed close plays. It was amazing to me how often the video showed the umpires to be wrong on close plays at first or at home, when an umpire was standing right there.

How can they hope to be accurate for a play 150 feet from where they are standing.? Everyone has seen NFL replays where from one or two angles the call on the feel appeared to be right. But, after seeing the replay from a different angle, the call was clearly wrong. Baseball should not limit itself to calls made from one angle.

It would make the game better, a lot better.

1 I wouldn't mind if they also can change the call after they view the play.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
