What do you think the best state is to live in: new york,texas,or california?

This depends on what you want out of life. If you're sitting on the next Facebook or Twitter you'll find more venture capital in Palo Alto than in Dallas. But if you want a house and a family it'll cost you a lot more in California than in Texas.

For what we pay to have a suburban home and two kids in school (private school because CA schools are terrible) we could to own half a county in TX.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
