Left and right wing make politics far too simplistic compared with how it really is, but it's a useful distinction. It comes from the French National Assembly at the time of the Revolution, where the conservatives who supported the monarchy, established religion, and little change sat on the right, and the radicals who wanted change sat on the left. These days it tends to be a good guide to the answer to the question "how much government do you want?"
The right-wing idea is that there should be as little government as possible, so taxes are low and we get to spend more of our own money on what WE want to spend it on. The further left wing you are, the more you agree with the idea that there is more government can and should do for the good of everyone, so you agree that the government should control more. You might or might not agree with some of the things they would want government to control.
For example, if there is an expensive service that we all use but you don't have much choice of where to buy it from, so it's possible for all the suppliers to work together to put prices up and make more profits for themselves, or in fact there is no choice where you live, should the government take it over so the people can't be exploited like that? (This is the basic idea of socialism. Communism takes it to the extreme of the government owning everything.) Should the government help poor people out with social security and maybe cheap housing, so everyone can have at least a minimum standard of living even if they get unlucky in life?
If there is unemployment, should the government spend taxpayers' money to create jobs? If you agree with any of those, you agree with the left wing idea about it. The trouble is that it all costs money so a left wing government will have to impose higher taxes.
Or as far too many do, borrow the money - now that's all very well, but borrow too much and you eventually can't afford to pay it back. Greece did that far too much and that's why it's in a big hole now. So a bit of left-wingery isn't necessarily bad.
Some of these are good ideas to help out our fellow citizens. But you have to watch that it doesn't spin out of control. The other thing you find is that the left wing is more liberal on social issues, while the right is more restrictive.
This doesn't necessarily go with anything I've said above, but the strange thing is that most of the time, it does! So, for example, it tends to be the left wing that is more in favour of gay marriage.
Government authority and allowing as many as possible live off the rich salaries of those who are taxed too high for them to prosper.
