If I remember correctly, Truckers generally use CB channel 19 (or maybe 29) and no, you can't pick it up on FM or AM radio. You can get an inexpensive CB, though, for less than $100 - but you'll have to buy an antenna also, and there's always the cost of installation. They're not hard to install, but there may be additional expenses for brackets and such.

Some people feel that the antenna quality is more important than the cb unit quality, and while I don't agree with that completely, it is true that a cheap antenna can seriously impact performance. They can be fun and even usefull on a road trip, particularly if one happens to be traveling in a caravan - you know, more than one car travelling together. On long trips, at night, the cb can be a interesting alternative to the sort of radio shows one can find - particularly in the western states.

One night, traveling through Kentucky, I had a very interesting conversation with a couple of truckers - we talked about everything from novels to current events. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
