What happens to couples that die in a car crash,or airplane crash, if there is nothing to tell anyone about their family I was thinking about this tonight, when my husband and I were in the car. What happens if you are in a horrible accident, lets say you both die. You have I.D., but there is no information to tell anyone who your children are, or suppose it's a case where everything is burned up, and there is no I.D.?How do the police know who to contact if your kids are grown, and on their own, and their is nothing to tell them who to contact?
Sorry it's such a morbid subject, but I would just like to know. And what if the person who is the executor of your will can't get there before one of your other children can? My daughter, who will be our executor, lives in another state across the country.
What if my stepson found out first, and what if he took stuff that wasn't meant for him? How does all of this work? Does anybody know?
I've been trying to get rid of certain things I want my girls to have, NOW, but if anything happened unexpectedly, what happens? Asked by Kar* 35 months ago Similar questions: couples die car crash airplane family Amazon > Askville.

Your right but at some point.... There really is never a time that would be considered right for thinking of or finding out information, I do know it should be of concern once one is married especially with children involved. Or in cases of patch work families! If you plan on taking a flight or lengthy vacation and driving always inform relatives of your route so they know where to start if something does happen and they don't hear from you!
There are ways of identifying, lets take air crashes they have boarding and accountability. If there is a head count among survivors they will know where to begin. In vehicles accidents the auto information at the DMV will help identify the owners and the police will work from there. It is seldom that all will burn up, the plates or Vin number of the vehicle will always survive what might be unknown are the passengers.
This is where they investigate owners, survivors and who to contact! In the case of finding next of kin they will have to search by asking neighbors and local Government data banks on family history for all and any information leading to next of kin! The only way to ensure the executor has the legal right is with a will, power of attorney and the keys, anyone entering your home without a key is trespassing and can be arrested.
It would always be best to have your best friend know what to do in situation like this if it were to happen. Maybe a well trusted neighbor that has information to help assist police in notifying family! This same best friend or neighbor could notify your family Lawyer or executor!
If family members were to take before executor arrived the executor could have them arrested if proof is available and have the stolen property recovered! There is no real fool proof way for anything, your trusted neighbor could watch the property for you until executor arrives! I hope there is somthing here that can help you, this is only my personal opinion!

I know exactly what you mean! What with all that is going on with me and our family being who they are (cough) I decided to put in place as many safe guards as possible. I started with lawyers and wills.
A living will, which is in the hands of my Internist, Oncologist and daughter, states quite specifically not to take any extraordinary measures. I have also verbalized this to several other folks, family and otherwise. I did similar things with my and my husbands wills. My daughter, also in CA, has a copy.
My sister in Florida has a copy and our attorney is the executor. Why? I have one and half stepdaughters who I trust only as far as I can see them.
(I'll tell you that story another time. Vultures.) I also carry emergency contact information in my wallet as to who should be notified. Husband, daughter, sister--in that order.
I chose not to have my daughter as our executor for a couple of reasons. One, it's a ton of work and would become a burden for her. (I've seen that happen and the advice from my friend was never do that to you child.
) Two, she lives in California and it would keep her away from her family and work for to long a period of time, thus unmanageable. Third, the lawyer becomes an unbiased third person to can ensure the stipulations of the will are met to the letter. He is in a position to take whatever legal action is necessary to uphold his responsibilities.
1 I don't know about you guys but I'm one of those annoying people that have become permanently grafted to my cell phone. I don't go anywhere without it. I forgot where I first heard or read about putting the ICE thing in your phone address book (ICE= In Case of Emergency) and listing emergency contacts, dr. names, or whatever info you think emergency professionals might find helpful.
I've since heard it from a couple of different places, so that's what I did. (Now as long as my plane doesn't land in the Hudson, or my car go off a bridge into the drink and short out my phone, it should work fine! )As for having the proper person distribute your stuff where you want it to go, I suppose I really don't know what I'm talking about but it seems to me that I've heard that you can go to the county recorder's office and record any document you want to become a matter of public record (for a small fee).
Maybe you could do this with your will? If it was a matter of public record, the people who don't get what they should would have some recourse.

Sounds like there is a bit of a question about how notification happens, and then the larger concern in about the estate--like wanting great-grandma's engagement ring to go to the daughter and etc. These are all SWAGs on my part, but I have taken it for granted that they would start with ID and go back to state records to try to locate next of kin. Some degree of due diligence would be required before they could throw up their hands and decide there are no next of kin. In the case of a big incident, (plane crash) there is always news out there and the inevitable phone number for relations to call.
From the other side, it won't be long before someone begins missing someone, so there is a search implemented from the other side and pieces get put together.(We still have John Does of course..)If someone finds out first and takes something from the house, I don't see that there is any recourse. If it is in a will, and it can be proved, they need to give it back or pay the estate or something like that. The stepson could not really have the will probated without the daughter knowing about it, if that is what you are wondering.
It is a concern, hoping that one's final wishes are seen to..

I always thought that ~ lets say we are not locate and we are brought to another hospital than the one we use, that they would call the local hospital (that we do use from the address on my ID) and the hospital tells them who is to be contacted ~ which is my Mother. Ever single time I go to the hospital they update this information. ICE ~ is awesome too, I just have to do it.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
