It depends.....on the nature of your rental contract. They will vary by car rental company, by geography, by corporate rental agreement with that car rental company, and probably by other factors I am unaware of. For example, if you and I work for the same corporation and you used the corporate rental plan, then depending upon this or that condition, I might be covered as a coworker, whether you list me on the agreement or not.
A better example is if we fly to, say, Dallas together and I rent a car using our company plan, then there may be a provision in that plan that allows fellow employees to drive the car, even though they are not listed as drivers on the contract. If you drove the car back to the airport and had an accident, in that case, you would be covered even though you were not listed on the contract as a driver. Now, I am sure this is subject to well-defined restrictions. So, if I rent the car in Dallas for us to go to a business meeting, you probably aren’t supposed to use it that evening to help your Dallas cousin Jim transport cinderblocks...and you aren’t supposed to drive it off road either, e.g. , off a highway onto a dirt road to a ranch or something.
If, the above does not apply, then, as the contractholder, you are going to be responsible. However, you definitely want to inquire to see how your auto policy will cover your friend. Your policy will often cover you in a rental car.
Hopefully, your friend has auto insurance of his/her own. That policy may help kick in and cover him in the car. If you go to your auto insurer and if they will cover you, then you can be sure they will want to offload as much as possible onto your friend’s insurance policy.
My experience is that auto rental companies are really aggressive to minimize their costs in such situations. So, you may have to get creative and aggressive yourself. Good luck to you. Sources: Lots of business and personal car rental experience in the US and overseas...I have never cracked up a rental car though...
Technically, the insurance isn't on the person but the car. However, the company renting the car to YOU will be surprised to find this stranger driving it into an accident. Thus, while their insurance might cover what HE did, the company might turn around and sue YOU for letting him have the keys..
1 It's your name that's on the rental agreement, so its your responsibility. Get ready to cough up some bucks. When you gave them the keys, you negated the insurance, so you may as well not have even had it.

2 I think it's pretty clear that when you get the insurance for the rental car, they ask you for the names of everyone who's going to be driving it. No name, no insurance.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
