What is a good way to get the last ring on the first set of courses on Mario Golf 64 and still be within par?

The one Im specifically talking about is a little off to the side of the course and I CAN get it through the ring but once I do I havent been able to get back to the hole and still be in par. Should you use a certain character? Or is it all technique?
