Cervical dysplasia is the name given when cells on the surface of the cervix show up that don’t appear to be normal. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus. The physicians classify these characteristics as mild, moderate and severe.
Cervical dysplasia technically does not cause medical problems but it usually is the prelude to cancer. Cervical dysplasia should never be ignored because if it is not medically treated, it can advance to an early form of cancer known as cervical carcinoma in situ which usually progresses to invasive cervical cancer. Dysplasia is usually diagnosed through a pap test.
The HPV virus plays a definite role in cervical dysplasia. €œCervical dysplasia is caused by infection of the cervix with the human papillomavirus (HPV). € Not all women who get the HPV infection actually develop dysplasia or cervical cancer, even though the HPV infection is shown to be critical for the growth of cancer and cervical dysplasia.
