People with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), also called environmental or ecological illness, have a chronic reaction to chemicals and irritants at levels regarded as safe for most people. MCS can be triggered by ingredients in cosmetics, perfumes, newsprint, diesel fuel, solvent vapors, mattresses or other fabrics treated with flame retardant, pressboards, pesticides, molds, and permanent-press finishes. Symptoms can include lack of coordination, abnormal reflexes, vision and hearing disorders, memory loss, convulsions, and other problems.
