Glycogen is a storage form of glucose. When your body needs glucose and it has been a few hours since you've eaten, the main source is glycogen which can be broken down into glucose and released as needed for fuel. For instance, when you start a workout, it’s mainly glycogen feeding your muscles.
When you haven’t eaten anything for a while, the liver releases the glucose stored as glycogen and can also convert protein and fat into glucose if necessary to tide you over until the next meal.
