Yes they are eaten alive (most of the time). It could be a food allergy. Perhaps to the oyster, perhaps to something else (as you said "many food").
Often people don't chew them. The acid in your stomach will kill them don't worry.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
