First, let's look at the definition of vegan courtesy of thefreedictionary.com/vegan : "veg·an (vgn, vjn) n. A vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no products derived from animals, as fur or leather. " Since oysters are definitely animals and not plants, a vegan cannot remain a vegan while eating them.

Having said that, the author of the Slate article argues eloquently that while eating oysters stops him from being able to declare himself a vegan, the ethics underlying the arguments for veganism do not provide any ethical argument against eating oysters, or at least the 95% of oysters grown in oyster farms. Having read the argument, I cannot find fault with it. Thus, I'd say that vegans cannot eat oysters and remain vegans, but if the moniker were changed to e.g."ethical eaters" (would ethivores possibly work for that, or would that simply mean those who eat ethics :)) then oyster eaters who are otherwise vegan would have a new philological home.

Got to admit, baby, thought this was a joke! Until I read the detail. That's hilarious!

I'm going to wander out to the garden and listen. I may hear the lettuce screaming when I gather it for my salad. Actually, I think there was a study about negative energy when a plant is picked - like plant angst or something.

I gotta eat! I would like a 1/2 doz. Oysters to accompany my tossed green salad, please.

And a steak! Sorry, this is just too funny. I was expecting to provide some smart-ass answer like I do with Phu, but I have none for this.

Truth is stranger than Vegan. No, Vegans should not eat oysters. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
