What is monotheistic?

Monotheism is the belief in the existence of one God, whereas polytheism is the belief in more than one god, and atheism is the lack of belief in any god or gods. Monotheism comes from a Greek word, (monos) meaning single, and theos, meaning god. From this it is evident that those who call themselves monotheistic, they believe and worship a single God.

The earliest known instance of monotheism dates to the reign of Akhenaton of Egypt. Monotheism happens to be an ancient idea and it has appeared in various religions and cultures for thousands of years before. The modern-day monotheistic religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam. As Monotheistic religions are founded upon the idea a single God, its believersgive some common characteristics to that God such as Omnipotent who has infinitely powerful, Omniscient who has knowledge and knowing to everything, The supreme creator who has created all of reality and is not dependent on any one and Benevolent who is of purely good.

Monotheism is the belief in only one God. Most modern religions including Judaism, Christianity and Islam believe themselves to be monotheistic religions. In ancient times, there were religions and cultures that were polytheistic.By comparison, polytheistic religions are religions that have more than one God.

Greeks, Romans and Egyptians all worshipped multiple Gods, one for each of the important facets of their lives. Around 2000 years ago, monotheistic religions began to emerge. Islam is fiercely monotheistic.

Muslims (followers of Islam) reject the Christian idea of a triune God, or one God who has three manifestations. Muslims believe this version of a monotheistic God is, in reality, a polytheistic God. They believe that Muhammad was a prophet of God but not a part of God (Allah) himself.

Muslims also believe that Jesus, who is believed by Christians to be part of the triune God, is in reality only a prophet of Allah.
