What is the best and safest way to polish badly tarnished sterling silver flatware?

We have a set of sterling flatware that has been passed down in the family and probably hasn't been used or polished in 40 years. The tarnish isn't crusty, just very black. Hand polishing I prefer to hand polish with paste silver polish. I like the way the pieces look when I polish them this way and I like that there’s a little bit of tarnish protection, because that might lengthen the time before I have to do all that work again! I’ve always used Hagerty’s and it seems to do a good job, other people swear by Wright’s.

Hagarty also makes silversmith’s gloves, which are great for large pieces, like teapots. You just put them on and rub with your whole hand. There are detailed instructions for how to polish smaller items with silver polish here.

I’ve also used the tin foil and baking soda method described here. It does work and, in fact, the results are quite amazing if you have a badly tarnished piece. But you don’t get the kind of shine you get with a good polish.

You might want to do this to save yourself some work, then follow it up, and continue to keep it up, with hand polishing. I know people who swear by products like Tarn-X but I don’t use it. First of all, it smells awful.

Second, it’s strong. I had a very pretty old piece with plating worn thin. The Tarn-x actually stripped some of it off.

It’s probably safe for heavily plated and sterling pieces but I stay away from it, just to be on the safe side.

Simichrome or Wenol silver polish That "dip" stuff is useless. My family has been in the business for decades, had handled thousands of pieces of antique sterling, and from experience we know to only use simichrome or wenol. They are pink pastes that come in a tube.

AND Silvermate liquid silver cleaner is 96% water and I have recommended it to all my customers for years and have NEVER had ONE person say it harmed their silver.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
