What is the best way to build up self-discipline for exercising and training?

I think one of the hardest things about exercising and training is self-discipline. Many times, people become over-excited about their new-found motivation to go work out, and after a very short while, they get bored and give up. I think that if you are trying to build up the desire and self-discipline to start exercising, you should start with small goals, rather than overdo it.

For example, try going to the gym for half an hour, three times a week. You can start with a basic 10 minute warm up on the treadmill, then do 15 minutes of strength training (if you aren't familiar with strength training, ask one of the personal trainers at the gym, he/she would be more than happy to show you a couple of exercises) and end with a 5 minute slow pace walk/stretch either on the track or the treadmill. Once you get comfortable with that (maybe after 2-3 weeks), build up your exercises, spending more time strength training and stretching.

Once you start to feel more comfortable, inquire about exercise classes that the gym offers; (I especially like kick-boxing, aerobics, bootcamp training). This will help you tremendously. Also, if you have a friend that is interested, try to get him/her to sign up with you as well.It helps a lot when you have a friend around to keep you motivated.

You should join a neighborhood gym; you will have greater commitment if you are paying and if you have someone monitoring your exercises, recording your progress and complimenting you along the way. The fact that you will begin feeling better will also give you a push. Its all a matter of getting into a habit and enjoying it.

On those days you might not feel like going, go anyhow and never give up. Its all worth the effort.

These are all great answers! Start out small, do this in a gym, keep track, and set microgoals to get to the end state. Sounds like common sense, but when it's about physical activity, I sometimes get blinders.

Best advice so far from everyone on Yedda.

Join a neighborhood gym; First answer is fine.

Read this book The Practicing Mind: Bringing Discipline and Focus Into Your Life . It provides you with simple tools to help you get more focused on what you do and thus enjoying even seemingly boring activities.

First you need to make it a routine or a habit that becomes apart of your normal life. To begin with you will have to really make a conscious effort to exercise or go to the gym then after a while it will become habit and get much easier. You should be realistic about the time you want to put into training and the time you actually have.

Setting yourself unachievable goals that are too much too soon will only make it harder and you will be more likely to give up completely. Make sure it fits into your schedule, even if it's only a couple of times a week it can make a huge difference to how you feel and look. Have a workout plan and set some goals.

This will help keep you motivated and focused. There's nothing more satisfying then seeing results this will really get you excited about keeping up with your training. When starting out go easy on yourself like others have already stated.

You can't just wake up one day and decide you want to climb Everest, that's why small steps are key and eventually you will be at the top of the mountain! Having a friend to go to exercise with is also great. You can motivate each other, create a little healthy competition between the two of you and its more fun then hitting the gym alone and struggling through a workout when you are just not in the mood.

Lastly enjoy what you are doing. If you hate running on a treadmill don't! You can take up a sport, cycle, swim, walk there are so many ways to exercise and get fit.

I personally hate running so for cardio I play social football which keeps me in great shape, I meet new friends and most importantly its fun. You are not thinking about "exercise" it is just a positive outcome of something you already love to do. Just stick at it, make it apart of your life and have fun coming up with ways to train that makes it easy and something you look forward to.

In my experience, you can build self-discipline for exercising by integrating it into our schedule. For example, clear your schedule for three days a week and then go to the gym primarily to build your habit of going to the gym. Yes, workout when you're there.

Yes, plan for a workout - so you can't get there and say to yourself, "Well, I don't know what I'll be doing. I shouldn't workout. " But go there primarily to guild the habit in the beginning, not to get incredibly sore and painful.

I started going to the gym regularly at off hours (Tue. & Thu. Evenings and mornings are good), and told myself I was just doing it to get in the habit of going to the gym.

I'd workout of course, but it was mostly to create the habit & strengthen my self-discipline. Hope this helps, Aaron.
