Cut it while it is submerged under water, as in a big bowl. The water will capture the onion flavor from wafting into your eyes.
In a food chopper, though I have heard a damp paper towel held in your mouth absorbs the fumes that cause tearing....but I was so tickled at what I must look like I couldn't keep the towel in my mouth ,so I can't say how it works..loljorja.
My best advice is to chill the onion for 15-20 minutes prior to cutting. Make sure your knife is VERY sharp and then cut the onion properly. By keeping the exposed cut portion of the onion against the board the propanethial S-oxide (irritant that causes tears) won't be released directly into the air.To dice, cut the onion in half through the ends.
Peel and keep cut sides down. Slice the stem end off and then use the natural lines on the onion as guides. Slice along those lines, but take care not to slice through the root end.
Hold onion firmly and carefully slide your knife through horizontally from stem end to root end, again not cutting through root's end. Then slice from stem end to root end as if you're making half-circle slices. Should be a nice dice with minimal irritation.
Using a sharp knife is the most important, the irritant is released anytime the cell wall of the onion is damaged. A clean cut causes less damage than a half smushed cut!
As you're cutting, run cool tap water over the onion and knife after every few cuts. This gets rid of the noxious fumes and helps a little bit.
I would pay for this answer.......refrigerating them does not work for mecutting them under water does notspraying lemon juice on them first, does notOnions make me cry...............a lady at work was cutting onions, and I cried! She said that I must have sentitive eyes~~As a kitchen manager and cook, I would pay for " the secret" that works for me. There was a time, that I said, it must be a strong onion to make me cry......now ALL onions do.
I use a lot of onions! MONEY, at stake here~~.
Slice the onion while holding it under water. This works for me.
Cut into a Vidalia . They don't make ya cry ..Or try cutting into one without opening you're mouth , maybe that will work lol.
Place a bowl of salt close to where you're cutting onions..
You can start by peeling the onions first. Then cut off the top portion but not the roots. Slice the onions into small sections and then smaller still, depending on your preference.
Only slice off the roots once you are done. Also, it might be exaggerated but you can use some eye protection like swimming goggles.
Wear sunglasses and have a piece of bread in your mouth while cutting the onion (seriously), I learned this years ago from a friend's mother.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
