What is the best way to get rid of stale, old smell?

My mom insists on using a mop that you have to ring out by hand. The only problem with this is that she leaves it in my bathroom and it's starting to smell so bad that I have to open a window! I think that the head on the mop has soured, but she refuses to get rid of it!

If I take outside and leave it, she brings it back in. The smell makes my bathroom smell dirty, even if I just cleaned it. Any suggestions?

You could try adding vinegar to the mop water because that is a great way to reduce odor. I have found that vinegar, in general, is a great odor remover. Add it to water so it isn't so strong.

Baking soda is a good additive too. You can use it mixed with lemon juice and water to get rid of the vinegar odor if it's too strong for you. I prefer the smell of vinegar to sour!

Baking Soda & Hot Water Baking Soda and Hot Water is a good combo for removing smells and it is not harmful to the environment, and is a cheap solution. I would dump a small box of baking soda into your bucket, add enough hot water to submerse the mop, swish it around and let it sit in the solution for about an hour. Then rinse it out and let it dry completely.

Does your Mom let the mop dry in the air or in the bucket? Air is a good cleaner and would help get rid of the smells (which is caused by bacteria - yuck ). Ask her to at least dry the mop in the air and not in the bottom of the bucket.

If the above doesn't work, you can try a solution of half hot water and half vinegar as well. Good Luck! .

MOP Buy her a new one for her BDay/Mother's Day etc. Throw out the old one and replace it with the new one. She'll be mad but she'll get over it.It is a mop not her diamond ring, and you will be happy. If your not this daring.

You could soad it in Water and Bleach (diluted) or Water and Vinegar. Both should get rid of the smell. Good Luck.

Disinfect it The stale odor in the mop is from bacteria growth. It can be freshened up by rinsing it a few times in a bucket of water with bleach in it. Try about a gallon of water and 1/4 cup of bleach.

See if you can get your mom to store the mop in this disinfectant solution, too. This should get rid of the musty, stale odor and the bleanch smell is fresh and clean. Try bleaching the mop head. I assume the mop head does not come off but you can still place it in a bleach and water solution and allow it to soak for a while. This may help get rid of the smell.
