Muriatic acid is dangerous and should only be used as a last resort Here's a tip for removing rust stains from concrete that you'll view with a skeptical eye ... but give it a try anyway. After all, as they say, what have you got to lose? If you don't already have it on your kitchen shelf, buy a package of unsweetened lemonade Kool-Aid.
Buy enough to make 2 quarts, then boil a half gallon of water on the stove, and mix in the package of Kool-Aid. Pour the mixture on the rusty stained concrete and then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Keep at it until the stain comes off.
You may need to flush the area with clean water in a clean sponge, and repeat the Kool-Aid solution and scrubbing a few more times. Unless the stain has been on the concrete for a long, long time, it should come out .
Here are some things to try. Mix 1 ounce of tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) in a gallon of hot water. This chemical can be found at hardware and paint stores.
Wet the concrete and use a scrub brush to apply the solution. Scrub vigorously and let the solution soak into the concrete for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse well.
Try a product called Iron Out, which is sold in plumbing supply stores. Combat really bad stains with a pressure washer and muriatic acid. Apply the acid as directed by the manufacturer, leave it to soak for a few seconds, and follow with a pressure washer set at 2,500-3,000 psi.
Sprinkle baking soda over the cleaned area to neutralize the acid and wash again. If you can't get muriatic acid, you could try oxalic acid. This is nasty stuff, as it's highly toxic, and it's not easy to find. It's more commonly used in the woodworking trades to bleach or whiten wood, but it is quite effective at removing heavier rust stains from concrete and some types of stone.
It may come as a proprietary "rust remover" in which case you should follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. The efficacy of these products is highly variable and they MUST be tested on an inconspicuous area prior to use to ensure that the concrete is not damaged or discoloured by their use. Mechanical action is the only non-chemical remedy; vigorous scrubbing with a wire brush can sometimes remove the worst of the staining, as can 'buffing', a process where a hard stone or abrasive is used to 'sand down' the surface of the concrete, removing the rust, and revealing a clean surface beneath.
Tips & WarningsConcrete is porous and should be sealed to prevent staining. Promptly rinse fertilizers containing iron off concrete surfaces. These products can burn eyes and irritate skin.
Follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions carefully. Muriatic acid is dangerous and should only be used as a last resort.Do not wash it into storm drains. In fact, it is no onger freely available at places like Home Depot and Lowes.
You might have to check with a pool company or hire a prefessional. You MUST wear protective gloves, clothing and most importantly, eye protection when using these acid based cleaners. Choose a dull or cloudy day to prevent the area being dried too quickly by the sun and pre-wet the area with water to prevent the acid being absorbed by thirsty paving.
Some other home remedies:Lemon Juice - genuine lemon juice, fresh from a lemon, not from a bottle or a plastic imitation lemon. Squeeze directly onto the stained area, allow it to react for 5 minutes or so but don't allow it to dry out. While still wet, scrub the stained area with a nylon/polypropylene bristled brush (an old toothbrush is ideal), working the lemon juice into the surface of the paving.
Wash off with plenty of clean water after 5 minutes and repeat as necessary. Vinegar - use a clear or white vinegar (spirt vinegar) rather than a coloured vinegar (malt or balsamic). Some readers of this site have reported that cider vinegar gives good results on some concrete surfaces.
Use in exactly the same way as described above. Sources: http://www.ehow.com/how_18444_remove-rust-stains.html AND http://www.pavingexpert.com/stains.htm .
