If rhyming a sing-song pattern has worked effective for you then you may apply it as well to botany but I only had done it with poems, lol. Anyway, we have different preferences on how to retain things in mind but if you are still young then I don't see any serious memory problem with you. I expected that you still have a very good memory and that you are focused with your subject and not on something else.
And in botany, you have the laboratory experiments. In order to retain knowledge, do not just memorize terms you have to be participative in all activities given by your teacher. Since many of the botany terms also are derivations from Latin, you will just easily understand them by knowing first their root words and understanding the prefixes and suffices added.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
