From Wikipedia: Cemeteries are distinguished from other burial grounds by the fact that they are they are usually purpose built, and in most cases, are not adjoined to a church or other place of worship. Many cemeteries are municipally owned. A graveyard, on the other hand, is usually much smaller in size than a cemetery, most often it is adjoined to a church or other place of worship and most significantly, is often located on a churchyard on consecrated church ground..
My understanding is that graveyards are on the grounds of a church and cemeteries are publicly or privately owned. This is not based on any fact that I can quote. It's just what I've heard as traditional.
The cemeteries would be city, family, or business owned, with no church affiliation. The graveyards would be part of the church grounds and would traditionally be only for members of the church and their families.
The two terms seem to be interchangeable but I had always heard that the distinction is that cemeteries are generic but graveyards referred to burial grounds associated with a church. I haven't researched this exhaustively but it is just what I was told in the past. A quick answer.
:) .
Well you got me on that one! I looked in the dictionary and under cemetery it says it's a burial ground other than a churchyard. Now in my view I would have figured it would have been in a churchyard.
Under graveyard it just says burial ground. Which I figured would have been some of these old places no where near a church. Shows you what I know, huh?
