I have seen what "look" to be the same items listed as DS and DS Lite on numerous sites. What's really the difference? Which one came first?
Are they backwards/forwards compatible? Which one should I choose? Asked by Kath711 54 months ago Similar questions: difference Nintendo DS Lite Consumer Electronics > Video Games.

The DS Lite is lighter, has a brighter screen and a thicker stylus I own both a DS and DS Lite, and can recommend the DS Lite over the DS because: The DS Lite is lighter and "thinner" than the DS. It is easier to hold for long periods of play. The DS Lite screen is noticably brighter than the DS.
This can make a big difference when looking for details on the screen or when playing in places that don’t have "optimal" lighting conditions. The DS Lite stylus is thicker, which makes it easier (for me) to hold. The GBA port on the bottom of the DS Lite makes GBA cartridges stick out as opposed to the DS where they really don’t stick out much at all, if I remember correctly.
Both units play all DS and GBA games. I believe I did just see that the recently released Opera browser cartridge for the DS comes in versions for DS and DS Lite, that’s the only thing I’ve seen so far that has different versions for the different versions of the DS. Overall, I’d really recommend the DS Lite instead of the DS.
I'll also include some links to my favorite DS games, just for fun. Key Difference: The DS Lite will fit in your back pocket I'm sure the other 4 answerers will give you plenty of info that they found on the web on the differences. So instead, I'll just tell you what my experience has been. My mother-in-law has a DS and me and my wife have a DS Lite (mine is white and hers is pink).
The DS Lite is definitely *cooler*. Not that my mother-in-law isn't cool, but the normal DS isn't helping her cool factor unfortunately. For me, I need all the help I can get in boosting my cool factor.
And the DS Lite helps in that regard. I call it my mini-macbook. It's designed so well and it makes me feel like all those people who feel cool when they tote around a macbook.
If I walked into a bar I feel like it would be more likely I'd get hit on if I were playing on a DS Lite vs playing a DS. Now, before you protest I didn't say it would be likely that I'd get hit on, just that it'd be more likely. If I were playing videogames in a bar we'd talking 0.01% likely with the DS Lite vs. 0.001% likely with the DS, but that is an order of magnitude higher.
;-) From what I can see there isn't much a difference in terms of game performance, the differences I think are battery life (my guess) screen quality which seems much better, and form factor. The DS Lite also closes into a compact unit that just feels better in your hand. The DS by comparison just seems clunkier.
I haven't compared the sound quality of the two but I suspect the difference isn't significant. The speakers are so tiny that I usually just play using headphones as that makes a big difference. So again, it's all about the cool factor, and if that's not important go with the DS.
Just watch out if we're both in the same bar. ;-) Sources: my opinion .
Nintendo DS came first. They work basically the same, but the DS Lite has some nice features. First, like the name implies, it weighs less.
Neither one is very heavy, but if you are going to be using one for a while, the lighter weight is nice. Second, the screen is brighter. The stylus used to play many of the games is also bigger, so it’s easier to use.
They both play DS games and most Game Boy Advance games. If you already have a regular DS, you wouldn’t need to replace it with a Lite, but if you are looking to buy one for the first time, the DS Lite is better. In summary, get the DS Lite. It is an overall improved product, and fully backwards compatible. The DS came first.
The DS Lite presents a more enjoyable gaming experience, as Nintendo incorporated a lot of feedback from DS users, and came out with a better device. Key differences include: 1. The DS Lite is smaller (surprising, huh?).
And smaller really is better. It's more portable, easier on the hands. It's 21% lighter than the original. 2.
Better screen. The screen can get much brighter than the original DS, and this makes a difference when playing in sunny conditions. 3.
Longer battery life (though I couldn't find out by how much, it seems to be generally accepted to be true).4. Lots of minor tweaks (moved buttons, different size stylus) to make it more ergonomic. It's fully compatible with both the original DS, and the Gameboy Advance (as is the original DS), so the library of available games is large.
I've got one and I love it :) Sources: personal knowledge and a bit of internet research. The DS Lite is a redesigned DS The DS Lite was released after the DS. It has a sleeker design than the regular DS. The Lite also has a brighter screen, longer batter life, and doesn’t weigh as much.
They’re fully compatible with eachother. Get the DS Lite instead of the original. They just look cooler and less toy-like.
