What is the European influence in Rwanda?

The first European to reach Rwanda was a German, Count Von Gotzen who reached the highlands in 1894. In 1897 the Germans claimed all of Rwanda as acolony during a time of internal strife, German rule was indirect and somewhat uninfluential. In 1914 Belgium invaded and in 1924 was granted a mandate by the League of Nations.

Belgian rule was also indirect and used the Tutsi to oversee the forced labour of the Hutu. This reinforced the divisions between the tribal groups and paved the way for the genocides of the later 20th century.

On April 6, 1994, Juvénal Habyarimana was the President of Rwanda when after his death, genocide started. He was a Hutu. The Hutus were always the minority in Rwanda.

When Belgium took control of Rwanda, The Tutsis helped enforced the slavery of Hutus. Fast forward to 1962, tensions in Rwanda has increased. There's been violence and the first presidential election in Rwanda was won by Grégoire Kayibanda, who's party completedly favored the Hutus. In 1973, Gregoire was replaced after a successful coup by army officers.

Juvenal replaced him and became a military dictatorship. He had support from several western countries, especially from France. Juvenal did want Tutsi refugees to come back to Rwanda.

He was successful. On October 1, 1990, Tutsi officers in the Ugandan army let an assault that eventually ended Juvenal's regime. France has sent paratroops to back up the dictator.

Before the plane he was in with the head of state of Burundi, Juvenal made peace with the Tutsis at the Arusha Accords in Tanzania. Soon radio broadcasts urge people to do their duty and seek out the Tutsis and Tutsi-sympathizers living among them in their streets or villages. Between April and July in 1994 about 800,000 Rwandans were murdered.

Refugees counted at 2 million fled the country with the majority of them Hutus. http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextasp?historyid=ad24 In February 2002, Rwandan established the first census to find out the number of deaths of the genocide."1,074,017 people -- approximately one-seventh of the total population -- were murdered, with Tutsis accounting for 94 percent of the victims. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
