The 'Gorget' The gorget was the last vestige of armor to carry over into the 18th century European and American military uniform. By this time, it was worn as a mark of rank for officers rather than as an actual defense. It is a drastically reduced version of the full neck protection (by the same name) worn between the helmet and the breastplate and pauldron of a full suit of armor.

The gorget was last worn by the British in 1830, but it continues to appear in some military dress today (e.g. Some Finnish and Chilean uniforms) A Quebec militia officer's gorget A medieval gorget Sources: "Arms and Armor" (Knopf), images from: http://home.messiah.edu/~gdaub/armor/picgloss.htm, http://www.civilization.ca/cwm/gallery1/revolution6_e.html .

That'd be... ...a Gorget. Originally a piece of armor to protect the throat, it survived as an ornament for officers and nobility when other body armor became obsolete. Here’s a pic of Georgie Washington wearing one.
