What is the origin of the name of Pamlico County, NC?

B.R. Raleigh, NC Pamlico County and Pamlico Sound take their name from some of the region's first known inhabitants, the Pamouick (or Pamlico) Indians. The Pamouick inhabited areas of what is now known as Pamlico and Beaufort counties. Historians believe that there is evidence of a Pamouick settlement on the Bay River around what is currently known as Maribel.
