The phrase "into the ether" refers to the "upper sky", space, heaven, or the general "non-existence" in Greek mythology. The phrase is used mostly (if you google it) to refer to something that has disappeared or been lost. It is used in classic texts also to refer to death and return to the Creator. In the Vedanta Sutras we have this phrase:'What is the origin of this world?
' 'Ether,' he replied. 'For all these beings take their rise from the ether only, and return into the ether. Ether is greater than these, ether is their rest.
As far as my research can tell this is the earliest use of the phrase.
G'day jonathan h, Thank you for your question. According to the Merriam Webster, ether was the rarified element believed to fill the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Hence it has the same meaning as up in smoke.
The word dates from the 14th century. merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ether Regards.
The phase appears to derive from the old scientific theory of ether, also known as"luminiferous aether". This was a mysterious stuff that filled the universe and allowed light to travel from the stars. Ether was further given other strange properties in early science fiction stories. It turned out that the theory was wrong, and now we know of space, or "Outer Space" as being essentially a vacuum.
But if you imagine the concept, then "into the ether" has the same connotations as "out into space" might have today. Ether would be a forgotten curiosity had it not been, perhaps, an inspiration for the name of Ethernet, a networking protocol. Thus it took on new meaning, "out into the network".
Now it seems to mean "out into the web" as an extension of the network, even though Ethernet is only part of the technology.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
