It was an Oprah pick. A young boy has an affair with an older woman. The boy finds out she can't read.

Ultimately, this woman's shame over her illiteracy causes her to give up her life rather than admit she can't read. There's a lot more to it, of course.It's one of the few books which have made me cry. I just can't think of the title or author since it's been several years since I read it.
