The drug of choice is metronidazole (brand name Flagyl). Metronidazole can be given as a single 2 g dose or as a 500 mg tablet taken twice per day for one week. Metronidazole has a high incidence of side effects, including primarily nausea, vomiting, headaches, loss of appetite, and metallic taste.
A person taking metronidazole must abstain from alcohol in all forms during treatment and for 24 hours afterwards. The only other drug for trich is tinidazole (brand names Tindamax and Fasigyn), given as a 2 g single dose; no alcohol should be consumed for 72 hours after completion of treatment with this drug.
