I just bought a dog treadmill because the family dog is overweight (2-3 lbs on a small dog that was gained because he was on bed rest for months because of knee issues). He is small and gets too cold to be outside long in the winter and has to avoid situations where he could slip and hurt himself again, so I got this as an alternative to long winter walks. Vet suggested.

Any suggestions about introducing him to it or using it? Any success stories? Asked by heth0004 10 days ago Similar questions: experience thoughts dog treadmills Pets > Pets - Health.

IMO its a good idea, you might switch your dog to Science Diet light, he'll benefit in more than 1 way, People are going to scoff at the treadmill idea, but IMO its a heck of a lot better than no exercise. I've watched The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan recommends them and from what I've seen on his show it works very well for many things, Here is a link to his website and the section on treadmillscesarsway.com/search/node/treadmill I will say, treadmills shouldn't be used in replacement of long outdog walks, which benefit both dog and owner, but should be used when going outside isn't an option, like freezing weather, storms etc, Used wisely I think they are great! Thanks for the response, and the link to Cesar's website. I always liked him. The vet suggested the treadmill.

He is recovering from knee problems this summer, and is supposed to ease into the walking experience. He gets to go out and be in the yard, but the vet doesn't want him in any situation that could cause him to slip and damage his knees again. Heth0004 10 days ago .

You're welcome, sounds like the treadmill is perfect specially with his knees. Thank YOU for being a caring responsible pet owner, we get so many people posting questions here that just make us crazy angry over their callous treatment of their animals. It's nice to hear from someone who really cares.

It is me who is now humbled. I have been a vegetarian for over 25+ years and know that people can do some unkind things to animals. I know I could always do better myself.

However, apparently you take the time to read and respond to posted questions at Askville to give the people ideas and guidance, and that to me is a hard task. Thank you and the others who are making an effort for the animals. I am relatively new to Askville, and glad I haven't had to deal with those issues.

Still, I know that I am a work in progress and try to help others become more enlightened too. I have been pretty lucky to have some people who have given me something to think about, and I incorporated it into a change in my life. Unfortunately, I wasn't always so enlightened, so I am kept humble and try to help others and myself work towards positive change.

Thanks for your comments. Keep up the good work for animals. Heth0004 10 days ago .

No experience, but my thoughts are: if you're too busy or too lazy to exercise your dog, you don't deserve one.

And that's a general thought, not specifically for you.

I appreciate that you said that it was not specifically targeted at me because the whole point is that I want to exercise my dog. He gained the weight because he was not allowed to walk due to issues with his knees this summer. They popped out, which is normal for his breed and size, and he was not allowed to do anything for months.

He had to be carried everywhere. The choices were bed rest and possible surgery. He was able to avoid the painful surgery, but now I need to help to get him back in shape without overdoing it.

I am a little disappointed by your harsh response. Maybe you should try to ask questions to learn all of the details before laying out the harsh judgment. I think most people are trying to do the best they can.

I think some helpful advice or support would go a lot farther than a hostile attack. S vet suggested the treadmill. Heth0004 10 days ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
