Similar questions: kind dog dogs prefer purebreds mutts.
We prefer mutts... Of all the dogs we have had in our family the majority were mutts. Rescued from shelters, and other sources. The one pure breed dog we had, had so many health problems, she passed away at only 4 years of age, from stomach cancer.
I would also like to say that we much prefer females to males also. Right now we have 2 Border Collie mix and one Great Dane/Black Lab mix. Our oldest border is 14 years old, and in great health.
Go with a mutt! .
One cairn terrier and one shiba inyu We prefer mix breeds because they usually have less genetic-related health issues. But there are no real gaurantees, are there? Our cairn has a bit of yorkie in him.
He's the best dog we've ever had. Never thought I would be able to tolerate a small dog.
Mutts rule! I suppose it depends on why you want a dog and what you want the dog to do. Purebred dogs can be pretty amazing.
Before I got a dog, I spent about a year researching the different breeds. I decided on a Bernese Mountain Dog because they are beautiful, large, good running companions, who can be calm and get along with cats. What I didn’t understand, while doing the research, was that most of the information came from breeders of purebreds, so not a lot of critical analysis went into the reasoning or content of these books.
Getting a Bernese is no easy task, since they don’t grow on trees. I looked for one for quite a while. You don’t find them in the shelters, and breeders have plenty of business by word of mouth, so they don’t need to advertise.By accident, I stumbled across an article in the Atlantic, detailing many of the problems with breeding programs.
theatlantic.com/doc/199907/dog-genetics After reading that article, I immediately decided to get a mutt from the local animal shelter. I fell in love with Porter the moment I saw him. He was insanely high-energy for the first two weeks, and I was new to owning a dog.
He had to teach me a lot before we could settle into any sort of a normal life. Ironically, Porter looks very much like a purebred Flat-coat retriever, a breed I hadn’t heard of before Porter and I saw one win the Westminster show. One thing led to another, and now I have three mutts.
If I had to choose all over again, I would pick mutts every time. I am not totally opposed to breeding programs in general, just those that place profit over the welfare of the dog. I think breeding could be done responsibly.
There are many breeds with remarkable skills, and the world would be a poorer place if those breeds were lost forever due to the discontinuation of their breeding programs. On the other hand, breeding a dog that is unfit and unhealthy just so someone can have a certain appearance of dog, like a handbag, is not in the dog’s best interest. I love my mutts, and while I know that many of their skills and attributes are the result of centuries of selective breeding, I wish that people would give the five million mutts in animal shelters a chance to win their hearts before deciding they need a designer pooch.

Rescue! I am a firm believer in rescuing a dog from a shelter or animal control. It is absolutely random what you will find so saying purebred or mutt is of course hard to say... Given the choice I would go with mutt- they tend to have less health problems than the incessantly inbred 'pure' dog.
For example- labradors have a big problem with hip displacia and pugs have respiratory problems.
I have a miniture chihuahua My puppy is 12 weeks old. She is 1.6lbs now and will be about 4lbs full grown. I want to make her a Therapy Dog.
She is the first purebred that I have ever had, also the first small dog. I have always had large mixed bred mutts. I love all dogs.
