Yes I have a standard poodle, and she is always where I am. I've only had her for two months, and she's a lovely girl. I think being in a breeder's house with multiple other dogs was hard for her, and now she is queen of the hill.
Poodles are extremely smart dogs, and she has adapted to my life and rhythm very well. We had very few behavioral problems when I brought her home from the rescue. I had a great pyr as my last dog, and she was sort of independent, so this is a nice change.
When I'm at the computer, Sophie is under the desk; when I go outside, she follows me. She also wants to come to work every day, but that's not a happening thing. Fortunately, I work at home quite a bit, so she's not alone very much.
I normally wouldn't want this much attention from a pet, but I've just lost a significant person in my life, and Sophie has been a great joy and comfort.
Stuck like glue! Yep, my Pretzel is my shadow most of the time. Where ever I go, she's right there, if she can!
That pack instinct is strong, and thank goodness I'm the leader of the pack! She definitely wants to keep me in her sight as much as possible, which can be a pain sometimes as there she is, in the doorway of my studio and I jump up to answer the phone and I have to get past her! We do some fancy dancing sometimes, when she decides to move just as I am stepping over her.
The cat is pretty good about shadowing, too, unless he is napping under the bed somewhere. But they both are very aware of where I am most of the time.
Glued to me My rescue Golden Retriever stays glued to my side all day. When my hubby comes home from work he detaches from me and re-attaches to the hubby. When we first rescued him two years ago, he did not do this.
You could tell he was mis-treated and very leary of getting to attached to us. Now, two years later, he won't leave our side. I guess he was making sure we wouldn't leave him like his last "people" (and I use the term loosley) did to him.
However, I do trip over him a lot, and if I stop short, well you can guess where he ends up. :))) .
Porter is never more than five feet away from me. When I first got Porter, I didn’t understand how to treat a dog. I was a cat person at the time, and although a neighbor's dog had befriended me when I was about ten, I’d gotten out of the dog mode in the intervening years.
Our house had been burglarized for the third time. I wanted a dog for the sake of having a dog, but I also wanted a burglar deterrent. Porter had to teach me how to live with a dog.
When he first came home with me, I wanted him to sleep in the kitchen, which was a contained space with a floor he couldn’t possibly ruin. I figured that since he would be sleeping anyway, it wouldn’t matter where he was or if he was near me. I tried this for a couple of weeks, and it did not work out at all.
He was unhappy, and he made me unhappy. One night, I slept with him in the den, sleeping on the couch while he slept on the floor near me. This made such a difference in his behavior.
Much of his hyperactive craziness went away, and he just seemed so relieved at not being kept away at night. We eventually worked out an arangement with the cats so that he could sleep in the bedroom. Because I mishandled those initial weeks, Porter has separation anxiety, and now he won’t let me out of his sight.
The next two dogs came along after Porter had already broken me in, so they were never kept away from me and they don’t have such a compulsion to be right next to me. I am grateful to Porter for teaching me how to be a good dog owner, and for forgiving me for my mistakes. Now, he sleeps either in the bed, or right beside it if he gets too hot.
The cats have been displaced, but they aren’t upset about it. Our house hasn't been burglarized in the seven years that I have had Porter, but if the dogs ever did start barking at a burglar or intruder, I would keep the dogs safely inside the house while I went out with a flashlight to investigate. Now, my dogs are my most valued possesions, and I would rather lose all my material belongings than lose a dog.
All thanks to Porter. Sources: Porter taught me everything I need to know Video This video of my Kelsy doesn't really have anything to do with the question. It just cracks me up..
Always... Everywhere, all the time. I can't even go to the bathroom without them. It's like they think there's another door that I'm going to escape through. It's a good thing they are small dogs (Shih Tzus).
