Béchamel. It is the cream based mother sauce. Its counter is Velouté, which contains no cream but it blond in color.
However true alfredo sauce does not contain cream. It is traditionally a butter-cheese sauce (pref. Pecorino romano) tossed a la minute with tagliatelle (fresh fettuccine).
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
