When I was just out of high school, I couldn't afford to go to post secondary school so I really didn't have much choice and ended up doing office work. I have worked my way up from clerical jobs to an IT position by taking courses at my own expense throughout my career, but office work has never really satisfied me. It was a means to an end...I needed to work and did what I had to.My real love is art which includes drawing, painting and writing.
I do much better being my own boss and working my own hours. I am much happier when I am creating something and feel a great deal of satisfaction when it has been completed. I am now nearing retirement from my full-time work and with the accomplishments and experience that I have gained over the years, I will be able to continue with what I truly love to do - create things.
If I were to do it all over again, I would find a way to pursue my dreams much earlier and have a more satisfying career.
I tailored my career choice to my likes and interests. I also thought about where I'd like to ultimately end up and then made a plan to get there. However, I didn't actually finalize my plans or really start working towards them until high school was over.
For what it's worth, I don't think my ideas would have been supported anyway, so perhaps the fact that I didn't know what I was going to do during high school worked out for the best. They aren't very helpful when it comes to anything that's not achieved through college or university, especially if it requires a lot of capital to get started. If what you wanted to do required investor money, they'd pretty much tell you to think of something else.
I had always worked in construction from when I was young just being a grunt on job sites. I was always good with my hands and was framing by the time I was 14. But I always saw the guy with the money was the owner. So I went to College and kept my hands in it and went into Real Estate.
I wanted to be a writer in middle school..but I wouldn't say I choose it as a career. I always believed with so much competition I'd never do it unless I managed to work my way through college. The net changed all that... now you can make a living as a writer with no formal training.
What motivated you to make the career choice.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
