It might sound silly, but "Anne of Green Gables" (and the other books in the series) by L.M. Montgomery has had a huge part in shaping my way of looking at the world.
Off the top of my head - Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence.
I'd have to go with "The Stranger" and its take on society vs individual.
I've read so many books that nothing specific comes to mind. But a little brain squeezing reminds me of a relatively recent book I read: Hunger Games" by Suzzan Collins. In this book I learned so much about surviving in the wilderness and how to find edible things when there is famine.
I'm not sure in how many countries such skills would be essential, but here when every 20years there is a big war such ideas are priceless.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
