What parts of my PC do I need to scan with McAfee security supplied by my internet provider? It's taking hours now?

It's taking hours now. I have Win XP. I have tried to limit which files and programs are scanned but it doesn't seem to help.

Mcafee is broken or you're scanning networked drives or you have gazillions of files. If it's taking hours then, I'm guessing, it's due to either a) McAfee is broken or b) you're scanning networked drives. Open up the Mcafee 'VirusScan On-Access Scan Statistics' panel by right clicking on the docked icon.

What do you see? Are files being scanned? If not, then McAfee might broken or your settings are out of whack.

If files are being scanned, what & where are they? Do you have bazillions of files on your computer? I've seen temporary directories on Windows so huge that they crashed the system.

I had to boot up with a CD and erase the temporary directories. Do you see if any networked drives are being scanned? That could take hours.

A nice free utility is FileMonitor. Search for 'FileMon for Windows v7.04. By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell'. It's help me out a lot in determining which files were being accessed.

Sources: Sadly, personal experience.

Two folders, but they are still big... Generally speaking, there are two folders that need to be scanned. This will get a majority of viruses, but not all of them. So it's a good place to start, but you should still do a complete scan from time to time.

The two folders are... C:\Windows C:\Program Files You should scan both of these with subfolder scans turned on. These are big folders, though, so you will still be spending some time on them.

The entire computer. Therefore, I'll either set the thing up to scan at night while I'm asleep and don't care how long it takes, or (lately), turn this thing on when I get up for it to scan @ 07:00 because physical therapy, breakfast, prayers, Bible study, etc. All take about the next three hours anyway. This computer has Windows XP, and I'm running PC Tools on it, which takes usually 2.5+ hours to run a C:\ drive scan.

And that's in addition to the Registry Mechanic scan. So, now that you know they take a while, plan for the scans to take a while. Read a book?

1 Scan them all initially. You should be able to compute normally while it scans in the background.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
