On HubPages (or a lot of other writing/content sites) a person doesn't need to be a gifted writer in order to earn. What matters when it comes to earning is that the person writes about what a lot of people search for. Generally, a person just needs to have a basic ability to put together a grammatically correct and spelling-error-free piece of writing.
Grammar-check and spell-check programs can eliminate the glaring errors, and if a few errors get by it won't be too harmful in terms of earning. In other words, a person doesn't need to have great style and ability to earn - only the basic ability to put together several paragraphs. A Hubber can put together a really amazing piece of creative writing, but even the most amazing piece of creative writing won't necessarily earn.
Then again, however, having good style can attract Hub followers or other readers, which can factor into the writer's overall HubScore and get a Hubber more visibility. Also, with Hubs that are voted "up", rather than "down", the individual Hub's score contribute to the writer's overall score. The writer who can put together a Hub that has substance and/or useful information with style is more likely to put together a Hub that would be considered "unique" (as opposed to "all the other articles on the Web about the same subject).
So, style helps but isn't the most important thing, by any means. Writing that doesn't "horrify" readers with its bad grammar and lack of substance is pretty much all anyone needs to earn, provided they write on subjects that keep showing up in the search engines.
Your own style of writing will develop over time. As for making money other than through page views, that depends upon whether your audience likes your style. I always try to think about who I'm writing for as I work.
You are more likely to read it if you can relate to the way the person uses their words to talk and explain or tell about what ever it is that they are saying. If they are talking elizabethan style or even in the biblical thee's and thou's or too proper, a certain part of the population will pull and Elvis and leave the building already. They will read no further and they will most likely NOT reccommend you to their friends either.
An attractive writing style can play a role in getting your readers interested in your content and in what you have to offer. When that happens you have a potential to make money through your writing.
It depends very much upon where your revenue is coming from.. what I mean is that if you are writing for search and planning a campaign based around high value keywords, hoping for a good ctr then to a point you are correct.. style is less of an issue while seo writing ability is clearly needed. However, if you are writing "sales copy" but in article format.. i.e. You are looking to convert readers to prospects then tone, style and voice are without doubt critical to your success.
Dear aoiffe379'It must mean a lot. Two writers can give the same information, one in a boring manner, the other well put. Which of the two do you suppose would gather the most accolades?
Ernest Hemingway's writing style was at once pedestrian yet his tomes were difficult to put down. Nuff said? Your style will follow your substance.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
