My thoughts I know what you mean when you say it is hard to motivate. Sometimes I feel like just blowing off working out and I force myself to go and every time I do I am glad I did. When finally I get into a routine I don’t like to miss going to the gym.
For me having my iPod with me helps. I need my music to work out; it just goes better. Get yourself a iPod Shuffle.So do what I do make yourself go, it becomes a bit addictive once you get yourself there on a regular basis.
My husband says it is because of endorphins it becomes addictive. To kick start your diet, consider trying phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. Phase 1 is for 2 weeks and it isn’t easy but it works.

Try this Set small goals. Since you joined, you may want to only attend 3 times a week for one half hour. This could be a goal.
When you set small goals, you complete them and you will be motivated to set more. Try not changing what you eat right away. Its more important to move first.
Get in the habit of moving first then you can change what you eat and have really good results. Remember, it takes a few months to make something a habit the will be a part of your life. Be patient with yourself and your body.

Joining the gym is a positive start To learn 'portion control' we ate Healthy Choice frozen dinners for a while...it taught us how to eat until we were 'satisfied' not stuffed'. A slice of whole grain bread with supper is healthier than white bread. We replaced butter with Smart Balance spread.
We found that once we weren't overeating at supper, we had the energy to take a walk in the evening. It's very 'social', getting out and seeing the neighbors...and we get some fresh air and exercise to boot.
