There are certain substances that bipolar disorder doesn't tolerate very well, including alcohol, recreational drugs, some herbs, excessive junk food, and caffeine. These substances can potentially alter brain chemistry and trigger bipolar disorder symptoms. They should be either taken moderately (depending on the substance) or eliminated because people with bipolar disorder are more sensitive to these substances.
Many of these substances can tip the balance between normal behavior and bipolar disorder mood swings.
