We use a few different things... HI, Our cat eats some merrick canned, I’ll also use natures variety. I think the natures variety may be a little better product, but it often costs alot more. I normally mix the merrick canned with some type of raw meat, like raw turkey, chicken, liver, etc.I often add in chicken heart.

-- However cats do need some bone for the calcium and phosphors content in them, since my cat won’t eat bones on his own (as of yet), I still use some of the merrick canned to make sure he get this content. So if you do feed raw meats to your cat, remmeber to either add in about 50% of a high quality canned food or make sure your cat eats the bones. Normally food that has a lot of fillers in it like grains cause increased volume to the stool.

All a cat food needs to have in it has base ingrediance is muscle meat and organs...i.e. Whole ground rabbit would be perfect. Canned companies often dump a ton of other stuff in there that is not necessary at all.

They do cook food that is canned which often destroys most of the tanurine in the food. Tanurine is an essinsialy amino acids that cats can not make on there own from other sources so they need to get it from there food.So it is necessary that canned food have a source of tanurine added in with the food. Bottom line, Consider Merrick or Natures Variety for a higher quality diet / lower volume stools.

There foods are 90 to 95%+ meat (muscle and organ). These food are approiate for all ages and your normally do not need to use a different formula for older cats or younger cats, however the amount of food they eat may need to be adjusted accourding to there age. Sources: personal experiance .

My cats eat Whiskas Ocean Whitefish and Tuna I have one diabetic cat, probably resulting from obesity since I used to feed them both dry cat food, so my choice weighed mainly on what's cheapest and has low enough carbs to keep their weight in line. I have not noticed an increase in volume of stool in switching from dry to wet cat food, and there may have been a decrease, but it's been a long time. They tend to have a lot less loose stool now, which is convenient for cleaning the litterbox.

These are the percieved upsides of wet cat food: cats tend to like it, it's similar to what they'd eat in the wild, there's enough moisture so I almost never have to give them extra water, and, most importantly for my situation, it keeps my type II diabetic cat at a healthy weight so I don't have to give him inuslin. Drawbacks: It stinks. And one of my cats, being the genius he is, decided the best way to eat wet cat food was to squish it into his paw and fling it at his face.

Needless to say, the food bowl quickly obtained a contained area and the cat food pawprints get cleaned on a daily basis. The tartar buildup is also faster than it was when they were eating dry food. I switched them to this from Nutro Lite several years ago.

The dry cat food was more convenient, but I would strongly recommend against lite cat food, because in my anecdotal experience, the cats tended to overeat on it, and it's mostly empty carbs. My educated guess would be that, like in humans, the amount of fiber in a cat's diet contributes greatly to their stool amount. Dry foods will tend to have more fiber than canned, leading to increased volume.

With cats a lot of the time the question isn’t what do you feed your cats but rather what they will agree to eat. You may have to experiment a little to see what works best for your cats because like people each cat is different. Our cat for example is one of those cats that can’t drink milk.

Well, she can drink milk and she loves milk but the diarrhea that soon ensues is rather annoying to both her and us. We started her out on the very expensive canned food Sheba but it gave her gas that would make a truck driver jealous. We then tried some dry food and she wouldn’t touch any of it until we tried Special Kitty and that she liked.

For some reason a couple of years ago stores around here stopped carrying Special Kitty so we were off to trial and rejection city again. I am glad now that the stores stopped carrying Special Kitty because it was one of the tainted foods earlier this year. Finally she decided that she would agree to eat Deli Cat and that is what she has been eating ever since.

She would prefer a nice fresh baked salmon every day but it would probably be bad for her and it would certainly be bad for our budget. The Deli Cat by the way does not seem to cause an inordinate amount of pooh. Sources: My life of servitude in the kitchens of Her Majesty.
