Dry skin and hair loss are a sign of poor nutrition and should give you a clue about the Atkin's diet. I may be taking an unpoplular stance about the Atkin's Diet, but it's not your healthiest option. Cutting out or severely decreasing your carbohydrates, while at the same time increasing your saturated fat intake is like taking a long walk off a short pier.

Sure you'll lose some weight, but at a very high price in your overall health. Dry skin and hair loss are a sign of poor nutrition and should give you a clue as to how imbalanced and unhealthy the Atkin's diet really is. Below are some simple suggestions to lose weight and not at the expense of your health.

However, if you insist on doing the Atkin's Diet, then you ABSOLUTELY need to supplement with several vitally important nutrients that become deficient because you're limiting various groups of food. You'll need essential fatty acids - preferably from whole grain rice, wheat and soy. They contain the linolenic, linoleic and arachadonic acids you'll need to balance and support your glandular system (which includes your thyroid gland - the gland responsible for your metabolism).

A human food source of these essential fatty acids can be found at www.feel-better.info. Because the diet can lead to increased inflammatory problems, you'll need to be sure and add omega 3 fatty acids from fish to your daily program. They are great anti-inflammatories, help prevent dry skin AND they'll also help prevent heart disease, cancer and other problems associated with the increased saturated fat that goes along with Atkins.

You're also going to need to add more colorful vegetables and fruits to your program. They contain antioxidants that are vital to overcoming the health problems associted with the increase in protein and fat and the decrease in carbohydrates. Diets are meant to be balanced!

This is the only way you can ensure you're getting optimum nutritional support from all food sources. To some people it's enticing to eat bacon, eggs and cheese all the time, but the Atkin's diet is not one that many people can live on for long. There's a simple formula for weight loss - eat fewer calories than you burn in a day.

Beyond that you'll want to make sure you're getting quality protein in your diet (that means lean meats), vegetables and fruits, lots of fiber rich foods, sprouted whole grains (in moderation) and low glycemic carbohydrates (in moderation). Low glycemic carbs don't elevate the blood sugar levels above the control zone and don't cause an insulin release. When you can keep your blood sugar levels within the control zone, you will stop gaining weight (insulin turns blood glucose into fat and stores it on your....!).

Add exercise to your daily program and you'll begin to burn calories and fat. I hope you find this helpful. Sources: http://www.omega-3.us/articles .

Atkins diet can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies Adherence to the Atkins diet can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In his books, Atkins recommends a wide-range of nutritional supplements, including a multi-vitamin. Among his recommendations, Atkins suggests the following daily dosages: 300-600 micrograms (mcg) of chromium picolinate, 100-400 milligrams (mg) of pantetheine, 200 mcg of selenium, and 450-675 mcg of biotin.

The diet is not recommended for lacto-ovo vegetarians, since it cannot be done as successfully without protein derived from animal products. Also, vegans cannot follow this diet, since a vegan diet is too high in carbohydrates, according to Atkins. Instead, he recommends vegetarians with a serious weight problem give up vegetarianism, or at least include fish in their diet.

I started Atkins a couple of years ago, and I did the supplements. I did Atkin's essential oils and multi-vitamins (mega men) from GNC. I also used coenzyme-Q (50 mg) and a combo of acetyl-l-carnitine/alpha lipoic acid (500 mg/200 mg).

I was very strict with the Atkin's diet, and it was very successful. I lost 80 pounds within 8 months, gained back about 10, and have been there ever since. But I am very strict on the maintenance - I never ever have bread or pasta or sugar.
