I was always invited to help my grandmother cook the holiday meals and when I was there, she would show me her special recipes and special techniques. She would give me an apron and we would spend the day cooking and baking. Making the special oyster dressing for my grandfather and baking the pies that would grace the buffet on Thanksgiving day or Christmas day.It was not just cooking that made memories, for me it was the entire process.
The memories of the way she taught me her method for planning and executing the entire meal. She would make a sink of hot soapy water and we would wash the dishes as we cooked and somehow that was just as special a memory as the cooking. When I am washing dishes in my mind, I am taken back to the kitchen of my grandmother where we would bake those mincemeat, pumpkin, and apple pies preparing for the feasts.
I don't remember exactly what the first thing I learned to cook was, at least the thing that didn't involve the microwave! However, I do remember my mom teaching me how to make scrambled eggs. I always loved scrambled eggs, and my mom liked to sleep in on the weekends, so she showed me how to make them.My mom always started with a non-stick pan over medium low heat.
I’d add a pat or so of butter or margarine and let it melt in the pan, swirling in around so the pan was well coated. The next step was to crack two or three eggs into a small bowl, taking care to not leave any pieces of shells in the eggs. For scrambled eggs, we’d add a splash of milk into the eggs, and then beat them with a fork or whisk until smooth and foamy.
Next, I’d pour the eggs into the pan, and use a wooden spoon to scrape the eggs from the bottom of the pan. It would go slow at first, but once most of the eggs had solidified, it went fast. I’d then turn the eggs out onto a plate and top with a small piece of butter.
Great breakfast with a piece of ham or a couple slices of toast!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
