What would cause the gauges on my car (a 98 Chevy Malibu) to completely shut off and then turn right back on?

There maybe a bad wire, Start by checking the grounds for the gauges some times care have a build in shut of if the oil pressure reads 0.

The gauges on that car are driven by the BCM, or body control module. It is likely that module is going bad.
