What would happen if a large asteroid collided with one of the gas planets in our solar system?

HOW massive are you talking about. THREE comets, asteroids have been observed to impact Jupiter since July, 1994. Shoemaker -Levy 9 broke up , but the impact scars lasted for WEEKS to MONTHS.

THAT's what happens. If a massive enough body impacted a Jovian planet, it's possible that it's orbit will be changed significantly, enough to cause repercussions because of gravitational interactions over time. The comets- asteroids that impacted Jupiter impacted SOMETHING, because they DID NOT come out the other side.

THAT PROVES there is a liquid/solid core for Jovian planets. A BALL OF GAS CANNOT ORBIT A STAR FOR BILLIONS OF YEARS without being dissipated by the solar/stellar wind from the primatry star. THE LAWS OF PHYSICS means that NO BALL of gas, except a condensing proto-star, will for more than 10 million years or so, which is the time it takes for a star with a possible planetary system to form and initiate nuclear fusion.

It would be like hitting a huge marshmallow with a paint ball. The planet would just absorb it and maybe show a little mark. The gas giants do have solid cores so it would just make its way there and add to the mass, if it wasn't vaporized during entry into the atmosphere, then it would just be part of the atmosphere.

The answer is definitely the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact on Jupiter. Check the actual video below and wait! This is the actual video of the impact (NOT A SIMULATION) youtube.com/watch?v=7zNuT4dbdjU.

Already has happened, several years ago. NASA has photos of a large Asteroid hitting Jupiter. Nothing Happened.

The Asteroid just disappeared.

The gas planet would probably say: hellooooooooooooooo breakfast.

Yes this happened quite a few yrs back Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Slammed into Jupiter. As the comet approached it broke into numerous fragments and over time each piece slammed in to Jupiter.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
