Most likely, they would either have merged with another company (Apple was trying to court Sun Microsystems into a merger) or else they would have gone out of business. Steve Jobs, hate him or love him, brought out innovative ideas (iMac, iPod, etc...). The only thing I fault him on is dropping the Newton.
If the Newton had stayed in the product line, I think Apple would have been the one the others were trying to follow. Might have brought the iPhone out quicker too (my hypothesis on that).
You might not believe this but I doubt Apple would still be around in it's current form if Steve had stayed and not forced out and went on the found NeXT. S forced removal gave him a bit of kick on the pants and also gave the incentive to create NeXT. Apple today is actually more NeXT than it is the Apple Steve came back too.
The "old steve" probably would have stubbornly stayed with the pre-OSX systems or hopefully they would have became what BeOS was.
He wouldn't have learned his lessons about the importance of consumerism and design, he wouldn't have taken Pixar to where it is, and Apple would have been building NeXT cubes at an insanely high prices with .5% market share and eventually caved to being a Linux hardware manufacturer.
Actually, I think they would have gone bankrupt. Steve was arrogant in his younger years, he was still a kid in his head. When he got forced out, he had a change to think to himself, and get real.
When he came back he was ready, and a lot of his idea's were already conjured up from the wait. That's what I think...
They would have invented the next generation electronic fruit basket, with a chip powerful enough to tell you when each of your mangoes is ripe. The company would have been headed by Steve Jobs as a figure head, and Mcaulay Culkin, at which point they would have moved into the theater production industry. Pixar would have grown to astronomical proportions, taking over the cartoon, theatre, and movie industries.
Eventually the TV industry would have become a monopoly headed by someone who doesn't want to show his face so he uses the image of Lucius, the cartoon father from The Incredibles. We would have found ourselves with a series of buggy movies, with zero plot, and eventually would have become a society of zombie movie watchers. And did NeXT make Jobs a better CEO?
Yes, because think of the alternative! Also, because he had the foresight to realize that if they kept doing more of the same, they would have been stuck where they were.
They might have done even better. Steve is still a kid and he still sees the computer as a toy/entertainment device. Without him, they might, -just might, have evolved into a machine that is suitable for office use.
If they had, without loosing the cool factor, they would have a much larger share of the market today. Don't accuse me of MAC bashing. I am answering this in my Safari browser on my MAC Pro.
But on a daily basis, I have to run Windows under VMware Fusion to run my business and make a living.
I think they would have continued to concentrate on making faster machines. They might not have continued to innovate so much with the iPod/Touch/Phone. Yes, I think they'd still be around, because there are so many people with Macs through their school discount program (very smart move there, so long ago) that know how good they are.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
