Good short trip So, from Paris to the South for 2 days including travel time, my advice is to avoid the car (or bus) trip : take the train! We have a marvelous TGV train going from Paris (Gare de Lyon) to Marseille in only 3 hours. It can be cheaper to book your tickets online the soonest you can, on the only website : - voyages-sncf.com/ (see the bottom of the page to click on an english flag) Next, what to do in Marseille?
I wouldn't recommend to stay in the city, because it's too big and too crowded. You can choose to go to the town of Cassis (20mn by train - not a tgv, a small classic train) It's a beautiful little town, famous for its "calanques" To see more : - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassis%2C_Bouches-du-Rh%C3%B4ne - pictures : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Calanques?uselang=fr - official site : http://www.cassis.fr/ Next, by taking a train to Toulon (1H) then a boat (ferry), you can go to the marvellous island of Porquerolles. It's really a nice little island, a pearl in the mediterranean sea.
Note that Toulon isn't a beautiful city, I'd say it's worse than Marseille. I just supposed that you'll come in july or august, but if it's not the case you'll have to take to boat at hyères (nice little town), a little farther than Toulon. - english page with boats schedules : http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/var/porquerolles/porquerolles.htm - http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porquerolles - pics : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Porquerolles?uselang=fr Hyères has an airport too, maybe you can choose to go directly (and faster) from Paris to Hyères and catch your boat there.
You can search for a good price here : - http://www.bourse-des-vols.com/depart-paris/france/vols-paris-hyeres.php So to resume my advices : Cassis or Porquerolles .
I spent a very nice day and a half in Avignon one summer Avignon is the capital of the Vauclus departement in France. It’s a beautiful spot on the left bank of the Rhone. It has a lovely Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters.
If you go at the right time of the year, you can see fields of lavender in bloom. It’s a big wine trade center, and a center for the manufacture of soaps and textiles. It is an enjoyable city to walk around in, and all of the main tourist attractions are in easy walking distance between one another.
There are also a number of interesting shops and cafes to visit. Avignon is also a city with a lot of history. In the fourteenth century, it was the center of the Papacy, and seven Popes resided there: Pope Clement V Pope John XXII Pope Benedict XII Pope Clement VI Pope Innocent VI Pope Urban V Pope Gregory XI The Palais de Popes, an impressive gothic monument, is still one of the major tourist attractions.
The city is enclosed within fortified medieval walls. Other things worth seeing include the cathedral, Notre Dame de Doms, which features a gilt statue of the virgin Mary, and the Musee Angladon, which features art of the nineteenth and twentieth century, including works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Picasso. The Calvet Museum, which houses archaeological antiquities, is also a place to pop into.
You could hardly miss the famous bridge, Pont d’Avignon, which is memorialized in the famous French song, "Sur le point d’Avignon. " The bridge has partially collapsed, but is still very picturesque. I enjoyed my visit to Avignon, and I feel that there is even more of the city to see and enjoy.
I’d like to go back one day. There are a number of sites on the web that will tell you more about Avignon. I’ve included them in my sources, and I’ve used some of them to sharpen my own memories.
Happy traveling! The South of France is wonderful! My suggestion First up, read Kate Mosses book Labarinth. This is set in the south of france in medievil times and modern day. Then, visit Carcassonne labyrinthbook.net/home/index.asphttp://w... if you don't read the book, go there all the same.
I was there in my teens, and never knew the name of this amazing town until I read the book and discovered it was there I had been so many years ago. It's indescribable! .
Take the TGV train to Dax. You are now in the strange department of Les Landes, which has the largest industrial forest in Europe and before that was a mosquito-ridden swamp on sand-dunes, blown form the shore-line to bury whole villages. Dax is a spa town, the spa started by the Romans, with a bustling town centre of shopping , art-deco architecture and old cathedral.
From Dax, take the autobus (from the station , probably) to Mont-de-Marsan the department capital - more bustle, more French shopping. And cafés on the street. You could have a chance to see the Landaise Courses, where young men dodge and jump over semi-wild cows, as was done in Crete 2,000 years ago.
If this doesn't suit, continue on the TGV to Bayonne, almost the world capital of chocolate (Biarritz chocolate is even better). Bayonne is another strange place - colourful narrow streets up and down a steep hill, a good local museum, a small botanic gardens and... a town where ETA terrorists hang out at times. At Bayonne, you are on the edge of Basqueland - the Pays Basque - that wants to be independant of both France and Spain.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
