What's that stuff they sell in the store called shortcake?

When I MADE shortcake, it was like a sweetened biscuit. The things they sell at the grocery are more like pound cake cups. Anyone how where the cups came in and who decreed them shortcake?

It's kind or a sponge cake...angelfood cake... I guess some commercial bakery, probably Hostess, decided to come up with these overly sweet sponge cake cups for those who don’t have the time to bake the original Bisquick shortcake biscuits. Store bought vs... Home made Nothin' says lovin' like something from the oven.

Prefer the biscuit myself on wikipedia :Shortcake is a sweet biscuit (in the American sense: that is, a crumbly, baking soda- or baking powder-leavened bread, known in British English as a scone), and a dessert made with that biscuit. Shortcake is typically made with flour, sugar, baking powder or soda, salt, butter, milk or cream, and sometimes eggs. The dry ingredients are blended, and then the butter is cut in and mixed (or "combined") until the incorporation resembles cornmeal.

The liquid ingredients are then mixed in just until moistened resulting in a wet batter. The batter is then dropped in spoonfuls onto a baking sheet or poured into a cake form, and baked until set. Foodnetwork.Com uses these ingredients for the shortcake biscuits For Biscuits: 2 1/3 cups All-Purpose Baking Mix, recipe follows 3 tablespoons butter, melted 3/4 cup cranberry juice 1 tablespoon sugar The picture for each of these look the same, like a biscuit.

Per saucyman: Shortcake is not one legally defined, specific thing. Made in the home kitchen, shortcakes run on the dry side, resembling more of a sweet scone or biscuit. Bought in the store, shortcake is cakey-ier, moist and spongy, on occasion packaged and looking suspiciously like a twinkie.

Despite the dissimilar appearance, both homemade and store-bought shortcakes are legit, thanks to the eponymous ingredient, shortening. I did notice if you are making something with a sauce that you want the biscuit to absorb the sponge ones are recommended..

1 You mean those bad spongy cake-type-food-products. Well what about that day-glo high-fructose corn syrup stuff that they sell right next to them? As my mom use to say "Honey, they just don't know any better." .

3 What Carla said. It's just pound cake, shaped vaguely like a biscuit. It is "short cake" in the sense of being a cake made with shortening, but it's not proper shortcake.

Plenty of people like it, and to each their own.
